GW3 has identified five strategic and interconnected accelerators that exist across all industry sectors and will deliver economic growth when maximised.

By 2025, our region, through reducing carbon output, will have continued to diversify its economic base, ensuring long-term social and economic prosperity.

Greater Whitsunday

region has been at the forefront of over the horizon thinking and is focused on seizing the opportunities that global decarbonisation brings.

The way to achieve

this goal is to enhance the region’s METS capabilities to understand and secure new opportunities.

Plenty of power

to fuel our industries by diversifying revenue; lowering carbon footprint; education and incentives to support regional business to reduce carbon output.

Delivering on jobs

that make people feel like they are making a positive contribution to the greater good of the world.

Decarbonisation Accelerated Project

Greater Whitsunday Alliance (GW3) and Resources Centre of Excellence (RCOE), along with other key regional partners including the Local Buying Foundation (LBF), are working together to deliver the Decarbonisation Accelerated Project.

The foundation of the project is to build awareness of decarbonisation within the regional supply chain.  In addition, the project will provide coordinated, practical education to support businesses to decarbonise their operations whilst at the same time promoting the economic diversification opportunities associated with decarbonisation.

The Greater Whitsunday METS Sector – A Revenue Diversification Strategy report.

The Greater Whitsunday METS Sector – a Revenue Diversification Strategy outlines actions to embracing new value streams that leverage the region’s established skills and expertise within its METS sector.

More than 40 stakeholders across METS managers and owners, resources companies, state and local government and industry bodies and committees engaged to discuss perceptions of diversification and decarbonisation in the Greater Whitsunday region during the development of the strategy.

Over many decades of supporting the mining sector, regional METS businesses have evolved into a high performing industry with a depth of skills and expertise unmatched in other Australian regions.

The strategy also identified seven new and emerging industries most aligned to regional strengths.  A multi-criteria analysis has been applied to identify sectors with a high degree of adjacency to the skills and expertise of the region’s METS sector, as well as those considered to be high growth in the future.

Some of these sectors include Critical Minerals, Renewables, Bioenergy, Biomanufacturing, Circular Economy, Space and Post Mining Land Use.

Some of the key actions identified in the strategy include:

• Powering a workforce: Supporting skills development/transferability

• Forging Relationships: Facilitating partnerships across stakeholder groups

• Exploring Opportunities:  Providing insights/information and raising awareness

• Championing Change: Advocating for regulatory/policy change

Renewable Energy.

The Greater Whitsunday region is exploring renewable energy opportunities to support affordable and reliable access to energy for its communities and industries.

By tapping into the region’s natural resources and fostering innovation, there is potential for cleaner energy solutions that can complement existing industries and meet evolving community and market needs. The Decarbonisation Accelerated Project is working to identify and explore opportunities for the region’s METS sector to play a role within major renewable energy projects, leveraging local expertise to support this transition. These renewable initiatives are expected to create new avenues for business, support local jobs, and enhance the region’s capacity to adapt to a dynamic energy landscape, all while aligning with broader sustainability goals.

The Greater Whitsunday region has been at the forefront of ‘over the horizon thinking’.

The region is focused on seizing the opportunities that global decarbonisation brings.

As the resources sector adapts and the domestic and international appetite for net zero mandates increases, our region is proactively supporting transformational change for the Greater Whitsunday’s thriving economy.
