From the high seas to off road: An adventure into diversification.
Jason Weir is a scallywag at heart, a trait inherited from his late father Gregory. It was their shared passion for life on the water and spirit of adventure, that became the namesake of Scallywag Fabrication. Jason and his partner Jannah Baker are the founders of Scallywag Fabrication. They have taken their passion for adventure and are building affordable, aluminum-based trays, canopies, and accompanying 4×4 accessories for their customers. What started as a side hustle on a cramped balcony in the heart of Brisbane city is now a large-scale operational facility located between Proserpine and Cannovale in the Whitsundays. Scallywag Fabrication operates using innovative technology, advanced machinery, and lean manufacturing processes to produce products that have been designed tough, are efficient to manufacture and hold repeatable accuracy. “I was working for a boat building company in Brisbane,” Jason recalls, “and I was just doing sort of work on the side on the weekends and after work. And then it got to a point where we were making more money, and we were so busy that I couldn’t work my 9 to 5 anymore. So, I quit that, and we set up the business properly,” he said. “It’s funny he says that he started in the shed, but honestly, it was on a tiny balcony in the middle of Brisbane City. It was ridiculous,” Jannah laughs. This humble beginning quickly gave way to a bustling business as orders grew and word spread, thanks in part to social media. However, Jason’s focus has remained the same: building the best product possible. “My ultimate goal is to have it just be the best in the industry, period,” he said.
“My ultimate goal is to have it just be the best in the industry, period,” Jason said.
Earlier this year Scallywag implemented the Multicam CNC machine and pressbrake, advanced machinery, which has increased their production rates. It was the first step towards their goal. This piece of technology has taken their aluminum trays and canopies to the next level, improving efficiency and precision while keeping up with demand from a growing customer base. The CNC machine has been a game-changer for Scallywag, allowing for continuous improvements in their designs. As Jason explains, “Nowadays, we’re sort of only making small tweaks here and there, just really trying to fine-tune things. So, it’s a lot easier especially with all this equipment we’ve got now, it’s a lot easier, faster to make little changes and implement them quickly.” With this advanced technology, Scallywag can adjust on the fly, keeping pace with Jason’s approach to product development. He’s always on the lookout for ways to make their products better, and the CNC machine gives him the flexibility to experiment and improve with minimal delays. “We’ve been slowly tweaking it and changing it to make sure it’s as good as I can possibly get it,” Jason says. The introduction of the CNC machine has streamlined their production process, allowing Scallywag to quickly respond to market demands. Whether it’s a tray or a canopy for an off-road enthusiast or a durable product for a miner, the CNC machine ensures the highest level of precision. Scallywag Fabrication represents what it means to be future focused. By diversifying into a range of industries and constantly refining their products, Jason and Jannah have built a business that serves the needs of traditional sectors like mining and agriculture, while also catering to the growing tourism and adventure markets. Their journey demonstrates the power of passion, innovation, and thinking outside the box. In a world where businesses need to adapt quickly to survive, Scallywag Fabrication stands out as one of the region’s change champions, ready to meet the challenges of the future.
Part of Jason and Jannah’s success lies in their ability to diversify their product offering to meet the needs of a wide range of industries. “We specialize in making trays and canopies to suit tradesmen, as well as your touring guys, off-road enthusiasts, and even guys in the mining sector, to help them achieve sort of what they want to achieve with their four-wheel drives.” “The industries that we service are agriculture, mining, the adventure guys, or fishing and camping like us,” reflecting their broad customer base.
