Greater Whitsunday welcomes release of Queensland Energy Plan

Greater Whitsunday Alliance (GW3) welcomes the imminent release of the Queensland Government’s 10 Year Energy Plan.

The Greater Whitsunday region is well positioned to capitalise on energy projects and looks forward to understanding how the region will play a role in Queensland’s green energy future.

GW3 CEO Ms Kylie Porter says the region already has significant green energy credentials and is primed for further investment.

“We have a range of existing projects including the Nordzuker Mackay Sugar cogeneration plant; the 65Mw Rugby Run Solar Farm near Moranbah and the 57.5Mw Whitsunday Solar Farm located near Collinsville.

“Importantly, the broader region’s geography is ideally suited to solar and wind projects and Bowen River Utilities has plans underway for their 1.5Gw pumped hydroelectric scheme,” said Ms Porter.

Ms Porter also said that through the Regional Jobs Committee project, our region had a clear understanding of the current workforce skills profile and what was required to transfer those skills into new sectors.

“Collaboration, coordination, and planning are central to the Greater Whitsunday region’s workforce approach, and we look forward to partnering with the Queensland Government on delivering to its 10 Year Energy Plan.

“There is so much untapped potential to build off the region’s already strong skills base and we know that green energy projects will not only change the nature of jobs in our region, but also potentially our entire economic base in the future.”
